MYTHS OF SCIATICA

Sciatica is a frequently diagnosed condition and is usually the result of a neurological problem of an entrapped nerve. It is commonly associated with low back pain and “shooting” pain or numbness down either leg. The most common cause of sciatica is due to compression of the sciatic nerve by a herniated disc; however, there are also other prevalent causes:

  • Nerve entrapment by a muscle i.e. piriformis syndrome – tight glute muscle irritating the nerve
  • Poor postural positioning of low back, pelvis, and hips
  • Sacroiliac joint issues
  • Repeated faulty mechanics while performing daily activities and exercise
  • Imbalance of muscle activation and decreased strength
  • Decreased flexibility and ROM of muscles of the low back, hips and legs

More often than not, sciatica and most back pain is caused by faulty mechanics of the lumbar spine and pelvis while performing activities. Overtime, these incorrect movement patterns negatively affect the way you move your body as they become habitual. It is important to identify the movements and activities that increase your pain and symptoms.

Just because a particular activity causes back pain or sciatica, does not mean you have to stop doing it. Identify what specific movement in the task is causing issues, and change the way you do it. Here at Ironhealth, we can help you identify your movement faults and help get you back to what you love to do without back pain or sciatica.
