Knee Arthroplasty is commonly used when a patient cannot achieve pain relief from an unstable knee joint. This can be due to Osteoarthritis, which can make walking, climbing stairs, and getting up to move very painful. Many times this leads patients to participating in a total knee replacement. You’ll most certainly find yourself looking for skilled, qualified, compassionate therapists to lead you step-by-step through your rehabilitation post knee replacement — we would love to help! After a knee replacement, it is imperative to have consistent hands-on personalized care to guide you through the rehabilitation process and meet your goals.

WHAT TO EXPECT
First visit will be an hour long evaluation including assessment of gait, range of motion, strength, participation in functional tasks (i.e. getting up from chair, going up/down stairs, balance activities). Based on evaluation findings, your therapist will design an individualized plan of care to address.
Initial recovery will emphasize pain management and swelling control through massage and appropriate modalities when indicated (ice, compression, electrical stimulation). Achieving full functional range of motion in your knee is top priority. Being able to move your knee within normal ranges will improve your ease with walking, getting in/out of chair, and ability to climb the stairs. Strengthening your lower extremity muscles will facilitate return to your day-to-day and eventually recreational activities. Proprioceptive (awareness of body in space) and balance exercises will also be integrated into your program to improve overall functional mobility.
As you progress through your rehabilitation, therapy will emphasize activities of daily living and recreational activities. Being able to walk within community without assistance, climb stairs, and commute to work will is essential to optimal functional mobility. Many patients also return to more advanced activities including tennis, golf, swimming, and fitness classes with minimal/no restriction.
